| Description
| - The innate immune system of insects includes cellular and humoral reactions. In regulation of these reactions, eicosanoids - metabolites of arachidonic acid, play an important role. Their production can be modulated using eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors (EBI). The main aim of this project is to study insect immune system (reactive oxygen and nitrogen metabolites production, hemolymph antibacterial activity, phenoloxidase activity, lysozyme content, hemolymph protein profiles and interactions with Photorhabdus bacteria) using the wax moth Galleria mellonella as a model and modulation of the immune system parameters under inhibition of different pathways of eicosanoid biosynthesis (using different EBIs). The specific role of the particular pathway(s) will be investigated, and effective antibacterial inhibitors/stimulators will be selected with regard to their possible use in agriculture and breeding.
