Description	Carbon composites reinforced two-dimensionally with carbon fibres were treated by grinding with metallographic paper, coating with pyrolytic graphite and/or by polishing with diamond paste. These treatments, especially coating with pyrolytic graphite, improved adhesion, growth and differentiation of osteoblast-like MG-63 cells (measured by cell adhesion area, expression of beta1-integrins, cell population doubling time and production of osteocalcin). The modified carbon composites seem to be promising materials for hard tissue surgery.
