Description	Inter-individual differences in DNA repair capacity (DRC) pose an important source of variability in maintenance of genome integrity and thus influencing a predisposition to cancer. Aim of this study was to develop a simple, but comprehensive, nucleotide excision repair (NER)-specific challenge assay to measure DRC of DNA damage induced by Benzo[a]pyrene diolepoxide (BPDE). DRC has been evaluated in peripheral blood lymphocytes of 70 healthy individuals. In the same subjects, endogenous DNA damage in the form of single-strand breaks was measured. For the comparison of NER-specific DRC as a result of specific DNA damage induced by chemical and radiation stress, a parallel application of BPDE and ultraviolet (UV) light was conducted in a subgroup of 24 individuals.
