Description
  • Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum (TPA) is the causative agent of syphilis, T. pallidum ssp. pertenue (TPE) causes endemic treponematosis yaws, and T. paraluiscuniculi is not infectious to humans but causes venereal spirochetosis in rabbits. The genomes of TPE strain Samoa D and T. paraluiscuniculi strain Cuniculi A were sequenced using several whole-genome sequencing methods. Obtained whole genome sequences were compared to the published sequence of TPA strain Nichols. The genome size of TPA Nichols (1,138,006 bp), TPE Samoa D (1,139,299 bp) and T. paraluiscuniculi Cuniculi A (1,133,391 bp) and the overall gene order is similar in all investigated genomes. More than 50% of Nichols and Samoa D genes encode sequentially identical proteins whereas only 15% of those genes were found in the Cuniculi A and Samoa D genomes. Major sequence changes including frameshifts were found in 88 genes of the Cuniculi A genome when compared to the Nichols genome.
