| Description
| - New liquid crystalline materials exhibiting ferroelectric (FE) and antiferroelectric (AF) liquid crystalline phases have potential applications in imaging technologies. The principal goals of the project are: (1) search and synthesis of such new liquid crystalline materials with elongated chiral molecules and non-chiral banana-shaped molecules exhibiting dipolar ordered FE and/or AF de Vries and TGB phases, and photosensitive liquid crystals. (2) Dielectric, electrooptical and optical properties of observed phases in the new materials will be measured in order to explain the cause of the phase transitions between observed phases. In banana switchable phases their chirality, surface interactions and their non-linear optical properties will be studied. In photosensitive materials the fotoelectric effect will be determined. (3) Mixtures of materials exhibiting the AF and FE phases will be prepared to find the phase stability or to optimize materials for applications. (4) Defects in FE and AF phases of confined samples and free-standing films and their relation to characteristic observed textures. (en)
- Vyhledávání a příprava nových dipolárních kapalných krystalů s protáhlými a zahnutými molekulami, vytvářejícími fero- a antiferoelektrické fáze. Určení struktury a elektrooptického chování těchto látek, důležitých pro případné aplikace. Interpretace pozorovaných textur strukturálními poruchami.
