Description
  • P-bodies are centers of mRNA metabolism, where meet pathways linked to mRNA silencing and degradation. So far, P-bodies were found in all examined mammalian cells. Here, we show an unexpected and important discovery that P-bodies disappear from oocztes at the beginning of their growth phase and appear again only in the early embryo. P-body decay likely reflects the requirement stabiliyation and storage of maternal mRNAs, which will govern development until the zygotc expression takes over. In addition, we were the first to show that stored maternal mRNAs do not have a homogeneous distribution. Instead, they localize to the periphery – cortex.
