Description
  • The avian sarcoma and leukosis virus (ASLV) family of retroviruses evolved from a common ancestor enters the host cell through several types of specific surface receptors. Rare genetic defects of these receptors determining the resistance of cells to ASLV members have been sought in a panel of inbred chicken lines. Mutations with mild effect on virus entry, i.e. semiresistance-causing mutations, point to the structural moieties necessary for the virus-receptor binding and subsequent fusion of retrovirus and host cell membranes. We identified intronic deletions of splicing signals within the gene encoding the Tva receptor behind the semiresitance of inbread chickens to the A subgroup of ASLV. Similar mutations exist in the homologous human low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor in hypercholesterolaemia patients. We also higlight the finding of these mutations in red jungle fowls. It must be a common type of polymorphism mainatined by the selection pressure of an infectious retrovirus.
