Human papillomaviruses were found to be closely associated with cervical cancer and some other anogenital carcinomas. Immunological intervention against high-risk HPV types can be done at the prophylactic and therapeutic levels. While prophylactic vaccines developed using HPV 16 E6/E7 oncoproteins are already being tested in clinical trials and show promising results, the problems connected with therapeutic vaccines developed using animal models have still to be resolved.
