Description
(cs)
- The CMLS article “Transcription factor c-Myb is involved in the regulation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition in the avian neural crest” shows for the first time that the key hematopoietic factor c-Myb has been involved also in the regulation of neural crest. Neural crest cells originate from immobile epithelial progenitors by epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). During EMT cells acquire invasive properties, migrate through the embryo to defined destinations where they give rise for example to neurons and glia of the peripheral nervous system and skin melanocytes. Pathologically activated EMT in tumours represents an initial stage of a metastase. The article shows that elevated concentration c-Myb triggers EMT of neural crest cells possibly as a component of the BMP4 signaling pathway. The data suggest that c-Myb is an activator of pathways that control processes leading to loss of the epithelial character and might be involved in initial stages of tumour metastases.
