  • The aim of this study was to describe the effect of added carbon (C) on activity of soil microorganisms and growth of plants in soil fertilized with high level of mineral nitrogen (N). Soil was sampled at the locations of protected area of water catchment Březová nad Svitavou. Selected experimental area is included in vulnerable area (according to Nitrate direction). Samples of soil were sieved, homogenized and placed into 125 ml experimental pots. All pots were planted with model crop Lactuca sativa. For simulation of different level of nutrient availability, urea was applied at the rate of 175 kg N/ha, comercial phosphate was applied as a source of P -- 35 kg/ha of P and ground celulose was used as a source of C. The treatments were: control, addition of N + C; N + P + C; C; N and N + P. At the end of experiment, basal respiration was measured to determine activity of soil microorganisms and substrate induced respiration was measured to determine soil microbial biomass. Leaching of N during experiment was measured using extraction of mineral N, adsorbed in ion exchange resins placed under experimental pots in flat plastic holders. Production of aboveground biomass of cultivated plants was also determined (expressed as g of dry matter). Significant differences were observed between the rates of basal respiration in soils amended with C and unamended ones. It indicates increased activity of microbial communities in treatments amended with celulose. Addition of celulose also increased the rate of substrate induced respiration, that indicates higher amount of microbial biomass in these treatments. Amount of aboveground biomass was without difference in control and treatment C+N+P. At the treatment with amendement of celulose, lowest growth of aboveground biomass of indicator plant was observed. It was probably caused by strong competition with microbes on nutrients. Also the treatment N+C was not suitable for plant growth and the plants died. Results suggest that h (en)
