Description
  • Berberine is a constituent of many traditional herbal remedies. However, its anti-inflammatory effect is still unclear and it probably involves multiple mechanisms. Several years ago, we demonstrated that berberine is an activator of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in human and rodent hepatoma cell lines (Vrzal et al., 2005). We described an induction of CYP1A1 mRNA and protein, nuclear translocation of AhR-GFP chimeric construct and trans-activation of xenobiotic-responsive element in gene reporter assays, upon treatment with berberine. For this reason, we propose here an involvement of AhR in the in vivo effects of berberine, described in paper by Chueh and Lin.
