Description
  • Purpose: To study the effects of different chemically modified titanium surfaces on the proliferation, differentiation, adhesion and apoptosis of osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells. Materials and Methods: In this work, six different titanium materials: i) glazed, ii) unglazed, iii) unglazed and alkali etched, iv) unglazed sand blasted acid and alkali etched, v) unglazed and coated with ZrN, vi) unglazed sand blasted and acid etched, were compared with cells on plastic. The production of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and the expression of adhesion proteins (integrin a3b1, vinculin) were evaluated using ELISA methods. Finally, the apoptosis of cells was analyzed by flow cytometry. Results: The most significant differences were found for unglazed sand blasted acid and alkali etched titanium disc in comparison with cells on plastic. The proliferation was decreased after 96 h. The production of TNF-a was decreased after 24 h as well as the production of MMP-2 after 72 h, in contrast to the expression of integrin a3b1 which was increased after 6 h. None of the titanium discs showed the apoptotic effect on cells. Conclusions: Our study has shown that physical modification plays a more important role than chemical one.
