Description	We tested 10 different Chlorella and Parachlorella strains under conditions inducing lipids production in autotrophic laboratory cultures. The most promising strain of Chlorella vulgaris was chosen for further investigations. Extraordinary high lipid productivity was found under laboratory conditions and suitability for large-scale cultivation was sucessfully tested. Lipids comprised fatty acids with a relatively high degree of saturation compared with canola oil offering a possible alternative to the crop oils.
