Description
  • Surface-induced dissociation and reactions in interactions of polyatomic ions with different surfaces (surfaces with self-assembled monolayers, carbon surfaces, hydrocarbon-covered metal surfaces) were studied using the scattering method. The experimental method is described. Energy transfer and partitioning of the incident projectile energy into internal excitation of the projectile, translational energy of products, and energy absorbed by the surface was determined from mass spectra, translational energy and angular distributions of the product ions. The distribution function for the translational-to-internal energy transfer peaks at 17% of the incident energy for the perfluoro-hydrocarbon SAM, and at about 6% for the other investigated surfaces. The ion survival probability is about 30-50x larger for closed-shell ions than for open-shell radical cations (e.g., 12% for CD5+ vs. 0.3% for CH4+, N=600), and depends strongly on the incident angle.
