Description
  • The linden bug Pyrrhocoris apterus exhibits a robust diapause response to photoperiod. Photoperiod strongly affects basal levels of circadian and downstream gene transcripts in the gut via the neuroendocrine system. The juvenile hormone producing corpus allatum is responsible for a high level of circadian gene transcript Pdp1iso1 and of downstream gene transcripts lipase, esterase and defensin characteristic for long day. The neurosecretory cells of the pars intercerebralis are responsible for a high level of circadian gene transcript cry2 and of downstream gene transcripts superoxide dismutase and transferrin characteristic for short day. The results indicate that gene expression in the gut reflects the physiological state of females (with respect to diapause or reproduction) rather than the external light-dark cycle.
