  • Mikrořasy představují skupinu prokaryontních a eukaryotních mikroorganismů, které jsou ekologicky nesmírně významné, protože jsou na počátku potravního řetězce. Tyto organismy mají také ekonomický význam pro jejich schopnost produkovat biomasu s obsahem cenných bioaktivních látek. Při produkci řasové biomasy jsou používány dva kultivační systémy: velkoplošné otevřené nádrže nebo uzavřené fotobioreaktory. Mikrořasy mají řadu biotechnologických uplatnění: od tradiční produkce biomasy jako doplňku lidské nebo zvířecí výživu, využití pro remediace, kosmetiku, až k moderním technologiím alternativních zdrojů biopaliv nebo cílené produkce bioaktivních a diagnostických látek ve farmacii a medicíně.   • Microalgae represent a diverse group of microscopic prokaryotic and eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms of tremendous ecological importance as they lay at the basis of a food chain. Microalgae have attracted commercial interest for their potential to produce biomass containing some valuable bioactive compounds. Two basic approaches to microalgal mass production are presently used: large-area, open ponds, and closed vessels ? photobioreactors. Microalgal biotechnology has shown a range of applications: from the traditional biomass production in human and animal nutrition (including aquaculture), technologies for bioremediation and biofuel production, products for the cosmetics, to the modern technology of small-scale precious production for medical and pharmaceutical products.
