Description
  • In this study, bag house dust and four different slags from the Tsumeb Copper Smelter (Namibia) were studied. The pH-static leaching tests (pH range 3-12) were used and contaminant leachabilities at natural pH were compared with EU criteria for non-hazardous and hazardous wastes. Bag house dust exhibited high leaching of As (up to 314 g/kg) and more than 2000× exceeded the limit value for hazardous waste. In contrast, the leaching of contaminants from slags was more pH-dependent, with highest Cu and Pb release under acidic conditions (up to 1780 and 752 mg/kg, respectively). However, metal leaching at natural pH was very low, far below the limits for non-hazardous wastes. Arsenic exhibited V-shaped leaching patterns with minimum at pH 6 for all the slag samples. Only in the case of the ausmelt slag the leached As exceeded the limit for hazardous waste. Our data clearly indicate extremely high As leaching from the bag house dust. We strongly support safety measures currently adopted in the smelter to protect the health of workers, who are in contact with this highly soluble material. In contrast, slags are relatively stable material under near-neutral conditions. Higher leaching from winddeposited slag particles can be expected in acidic soils, which are nevertheless not very common in the Tsumeb area.
