We will test key biotic and abiotic factors determining the structure of plant-insect food webs, including herbivores, predators and parasitoids in primary rainforest ecosystems along an altitudinal gradient in Papua New Guinea. A quantitative inventory of food web within one ha area, focusing on plants and selected insect herbivores, their parasitoids and predators, will be replicated along altitudinal gradient. This will permit the analysis of distribution of species and trophic interactions, as well as trends in phylogenetic and functional structure of food webs. The results will improve our understanding of the factors generating and maintaining high biodiversity in the tropics. They will be also used to identify local bidoversity maxima along the altitudinal gradient. These data will be valuable also as a baseline information for future analyses of trends in altitudinal distribution of species in response to changing climate. (en)
