Description
  • Human skin is a complex stratified biomaterial with specific mechanical behavior. Viscoelastic properties of the human skin are of great interest in dermatology, plastic surgery and cosmetics. In this paper, a new method and special device for viscoelastic properties evaluation of the skin is described. Measuring device and method are based on mechanical stepwise tensile loading of the forearm skin tissue in combination with simultaneous ultrasonic measurements. The device is fully programmable which enables to set up various experiment parameters. Correlation of ultrasonic signals propagating in loaded and unaffected skin tissue and signal processing techniques enables examination of skin behavior in various states. Results obtained using our approach can help to comprehend the mechanical behavior of the human skin and to evaluate the instantaneous changes of the skin viscoelastic properties.
