Description
  • ABSTRACT: The last few years have seen rapid progress in the design of prefabricated cut-and-cover constructions commonly referred to as TOM2s. Unlike the older TOM1 range where prefabricated members were monolithised in butt joints, the number of monolithised joints in the newer TOM2 range has been minimised. TOMs are considered to be bridge constructions, although in terms of their shape they rather resemble cut-and-cover tunnels. The first TOM2 type structure to be constructed was a bridge spanning the Vejprnický Stream built in 1996 on the rerouted II/180 Zbůch - Nýřany road. Since this bridge was the first construction of its type it was subjected to a series of exhaustive measurements and tests both during construction and following completion. From the very beginning, a simple method for the dependable monitoring of, particularly, the time taken to cover the construction was sought since the failure to accurately observe the prescribed covering technology, could have resulted in the risk of the non-symmetric loading of the prefabricated construction. The very first measurement performed at Nýřany proved that the most suitable monitoring method with regard to deformation development within the construction would involve classic convergence measurement using a tape extensometer (convergence tape). This typically geotechnical measurement, frequently used in underground construction, particularly in connection with the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, provides information on relative changes in the lengths of individual sight lines. Eventually, this measurement became a routine procedure in TOM2 constructions. The paper describes the extensive experience gained from the application of classic convergence measurement on structures of the TOM2 type, presents a range of interesting measurement results and puts forward a number of recommendations
