This project proposal is focused on research into the strengthening mechanisms operating in high-strength low-alloyed steels. Its aim is to clarify the processes and phenomena, which can be used to improve the mechanical properties of the material. New alloying element combinations for the testing heats will be drafted on the basis of the state of the art, the results of background research and the experience of the project investigators. The cast pieces will undergo forming and thermomechanical or heat treatment on a thermomechanical simulator. Functional structures with excellent mechanical properties, in particular high strength to elongation ratio, will be produced in the specimens by means of controlled thermomechanical and heat treatment. The specimens will be examined by mechanical and metallographic testing. Stepwise modifications of thermomechanical and heat treatment parameters aided by the optimization of chemical compositions will be used to achieve a maximum strengthening level combined with the highest possible elongation and toughness.
