Description
  • The main aim of the sub-project is to develop a set of methods for assessing safety and quality of food and to identify both beneficial as well as harmful components of food. The focus will be on individual response to both protective and damaging effects of identified nutrients in both healthy and pathological states. We will investigate the role of food quality and dietary habits (assessed by questionnaire) as potential positive or negative factors in the incidence and/or progression of colorectal cancer in the Czech Republic, comparing patients and healthy individuals. The project should discern whether the possible impacts of particular nutrients to health status might be reflected in an alteration of individual levels of DNA damage and/or DNA repair capacity, as assayed in healthy individuals and patients with pre-malignant changes (adenomatous polyposis) and malignancies in the colon. Addressing differences in DNA repair capacity represents an important milestone, as it is strongly involved in (en)
