| Description
| - The project proposed here will assess the usefulness of the micronucleus-centromere test of biodosimetry for cases of occupational exposure to alpha radiation. Published data suggest it is one of the most sensitive tests of its kind, and moreover may give meaningful results decades after radiation exposure. Initial calibration experiments will be carried out on blood cells irradiated in vitro, and the test will then be applied to three groups of individuals occupationally exposed to alpha radiation: 1) uranium miners from different parts of the Czech Republic that have ceased to work more than 15 years ago; 2) uranium miners from Rožná, Southern Moravia, that are still in the work process; and 3) personnel of the radon spas in Jachymov, who are inhaling significant amounts of radioactivity at their work place. A comparison between the first and the other two groups will provide evidence for the role played by genomic instability persisting decades after radiation exposure. The latter two groups can b (en)
