DEFINITION
  • Human superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] protein (153 aa, approximately 16 kD) is encoded by the SOD1 gene. This soluble, cytosolic protein acts as a homodimer that catalyzes the disproportionation of two superoxide radicals to yield molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Certain point mutations in the SOD1 gene produce misfolding of the protein product, resulting in reduced catalytic activity relative to the wild-type protein. This dysfunction has been shown to cause the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.NCI
