Description
  • The effects of different phosphorus (P) nutrition were studied on the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. We examined population growth rate, reproduction, and phosphatase activity in digestive tracts of individual rotifers fed by P-replete or P-depleted algal food supplied at three carbon (C) concentrations (1, 2, and 4 mg C L–1). Both growth rate and egg production of B. calyciflorus were enhanced on the P-replete diet (molar C:P = 107) and reduced on the P-depleted diet (C:P = 920). Rotifers fed P-replete algae had about a two times higher egg ratio than rotifers fed P-depleted algae, whereas the egg ratio was little affected by the C concentrations of either P-content food. Phosphatase activity in the gut likely reflected individual needs of the rotifers under different food treatments or variable individual assimilation of P, or both. This result suggests that rotifers can differently assimilate either P-content food by regulating the activity of digestive enzymes.

(cs)
