  • The paper deals with speckle noise suppression in B-mode echocardiography ultrasound images as an important pre-processing step for intima-media thickness (IMT) measurement. Many studies have shown that the IMT is an indicator of development of cardiovascular disease like myocardial infarction and stroke. As the IMT is only about 0.7 mm wide, the image preprocessing and thickness measurement must be extremely precise. Therefore, this paper describes many methods for preprocessing of echocardiography images and discusses their suitability for this specific utilization. Moreover, a novel method for ultrasound image de-noising based on image fusion is proposed.
