Description
  • The main component of teeth and bones is hydroxyapatite. The tooth dentin consists of winter and summer incremental layers growing during life time of human and animal. Its composition depends on kind of food and geographical location. Diet and migration are estimated from the content of Sr, Ba, Zn and Ca and the fluctuation of their ratios inside teeth and bones. The disadvantage of fossil tooth samples analysis consists in diagenesis affecting composition. Here we report on utilization of LA-ICP-MS technique for elemental mapping in fossil teeth. This study is focused on quantification of Sr, and monitoring of Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca and Zn/Ca fluctuation with subsequent reconstruction of migration and diet. Results obtained by LA-ICP-MS are compared with outcomes of Electron Microprobe Analysis (EMPA).
