Description
| - Microalgae are frequently used as a feed supplement in aquaculture which represents one of the important and growing economical sectors in the Czech Republic. Biomass of microalgae enhances nutritional value of feed preparations and positively affect the health of farmed fish. It is a source of bioactive compounds which can be included in fish diet. Inclined-surface outdoor cascades or photobioreactors (vertical flat-panel and column) will be used for cultivation of microalgal strains to produce biomass enriched by carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids or organically-bound selenium which are essential comounds due to their nutritional or antioxidant effect. Cultivation conditions, growth rate, biochemical composition and photochemical activities of microalgal cultures will be monitored during cultivation process to adjust suitable cultivation regime. Three diverse aquatic species - ornamental fish, riverine fish, endangered crayfish - will be used to evaluate the effect of microalgae-enriched feed. In the breeding trial, fish/crayfish will be reared in aquaria and/or basins. Survival rate, growth, health, and physiological parameters will be recorded during experimental period to evaluate the influence of microalgal biomass. (en)
