"World-wide scientific activity during past few years resulted in the remarkable progress in evolution of silicon-based CMOS-compatible photonics. However, its full application is not possible due to the lack of efficient silicon light source (laser). This project is devoted to basic research towards the photonics based on silicon nanocrystalline materials. The research will be focused on experimental and theoretical investigation of nonlinear optical response of nanocrystalline silicon structures leading to understanding of relevant physical processes on microscopic level and to optimization of the structures for photonics applications. The recently developed facilities and techniques will be used, which include femtosecond laser spectroscopy, AFM and STM topography, micro-Raman spectroscopy and silicon-nanocrystal technology based on both the electrochemical etching of Si wafers combined with the sol-gel process and the plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition."@en .
