"The project deals with the development of effective methods for the solution of problems which are difficult to solve due to the large number of unknowns, complex structure, non-smoothness or nonlinearity, including the application of these methods in engineering. We shall concentrate especially on the development of algorithms which can exploit modern parallel computers and which are in a sense optimal or scalable. The research will start from our results in the development of effective methods for the solution of problems with specific structure, which will then be exploited to the solution of multiphysics problems, inverse problems and problems of optimal design. The research will comprise the identification of interesting problems, their correct mathematical formulation, discretization, the design, analysis andcomputer implementation of algorithms, and comparison of computed and experimental results.
