"The goal is to determine functional relations bound to biological structures in water, soil and plants, and mutual relations among these ecosystem components: (i) in aquatic ecosystems - nutrient transformations in watersheds, lakes and reservoirs inrelation to human activities and water quality changes, (ii) plant cover studies will be extended to the watershed scale in respect to plant succession related to soil and water regime, (iii) soil processes - regulations of microbial metabolism usingsimilar approach for aquatic microbial communities. Mutual relations of the aquatic, terrestrial plant and soil ecosystem components in carbon and nitrogen cycling will be studied in systems modified by human activities by using natural isotopes.Mathematical models of ecosystems as well as models of life strategies of selected organisms will be constructed, which will help to elucidate the functional relations in ecosystems.
