"In this essay, the authors considers the Riegl expression age-value and the general terms new and old in relation to our understanding of tradition, a term which is used (certainly in other contexts as well) by both ourselves as conservationists as well as by representatives of the church. The goal of this article is also to point out the increasingly forgotten humanitarian fundament of monument care which, in an initially correct effort to preserve historical material, is often suppressed by technical and technological considerations about the monument. As a consequence of this approach emphasizing material authenticity, we can see a marked lack of interest in the content authenticity of monuments in conservation practice; in the case of sacred structures, this applies to the monument's subjection to its religious purpose. It is no exception that we view churches rather as museums (of the spiritual and artistic past) rather than living spiritual organisms; this is naturally met with radical rejection by the community of believers. We may use the Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist in Hostiva\u0159 as an example; a late Romanesque wall mural was recently restored in the church's apse, demonstrating a possible way of thinking about approaches to sacred mobiliary. In the author's opinion, such approaches should not be reckless or injudicious in a conservationist sense, but neither should they be a priori rejected by conservationists.
