A very limited capability of soil microorganisms (involved in soil extract) to PVA biodegradation was confirmed (approx. 10 % during 300 hours). It was proved that the degradation level was done by the removal of residual acetyl units only, because the PVA samples with higher portions of these units revealed correspondingly higher values of biological oxygen demands. Further tests showed that long-term contact of soil microflora with PVA (up to 50 days of acclimation) did not improve the PVA biodegradation; lag phase shortening and insignificantly higher biodegradation (approx. 13 %) were achieved only. However, the addition of selected secondary alcohols together with pyrroloquinoline quinone lead to interestingly higher polymer biodegradation (33 % during 300 hours), probably due to the induction of microbial secondary alcohol oxidases."@en .
