The energetics of breathing is described as the work of breathing (WOB) and pressure-time product (PTP). WOB and PTP are calculated for example to estimate the influence of gas composition on a patient\u2019s airway resistance or to assess the effect of a selected mode of ventilatory support. The article focuses on methods of evaluation of various components of WOB and PTP from measured signals of esophageal pressure, proximal pressure and proximal flow. A program composed in Matlab is described, this enables the evaluation of WOB and PTP components from signals recorded during spontaneous breathing with possible ventilatory support. The program is able to distinguish and compute the resistive component of a patient\u2019s breathing effort and the component necessary to overcome the work of a ventilator during constant positive airway pressure support. Furthermore, the problem of determination of relaxation pressure curve of the thoracic cage is discussed, as the curve is necessary for the evaluation of breathing effort during active expiration."@en . . . .
