The Model of Sustainable Development in City Centres“ is a collective monograph addressing one of the most current issues in the field of architecture from various points of view: what is the meaning of “sustainable” in architectural design? Taking the metropolitan palace as a common denominator, all the authors focus their research on the sustainable development of our cities using the knowledge and experience from historical examples and scientific methods, putting this into the perspective of comparison with the most up-to-date buildings and economic practices. The metropolitan palace is here understood as a multi-functional (or mixed use) building with certain (social, cultural and economical) parameters defined by the era they were built in – thus there are in juxtaposition the palaces built by the architects Fellner and Helmer, Jan Kotěra or Josef Zasche, specific examples of the Fénix, Lucerna and Koruna palaces and the genuinely unique phenomenon of Prague’s arcade-passages, as well as the newest additions to the city of Prague by such architects as Stanislav Fiala or Jakub Cígler. These buildings are placed in conjunction with similar palaces from smaller cities, such as Bratislava, Kyjov and Liberec, and as well are confronted with different typologies – namely railway stations, shopping malls, religious buildings, historical town houses, monofunctional suburban complexes and social institutions. The crucial aspect of this monograph is the relationship between a city and a building in the beginning of the 21st century. As a result, some of the authors present their research here on the vital processes of the city, intensive city structures, and the city of short distances. For the complex overall image, these specific researches are framed by theoretical work in architectural terms by Yvette Vašourková and in economic terms by Pavel Koch."@en . .
