"Since 1970\u00B4s the process of urban growth has been as fast as never in the history. As a consequence, the character and quality of urban environment play an important role in people's lives. By the end of 2030 around 60% of the world population is expected to live in cities. Residental housing will play a more important role in the urban environment than ever. In this situation of permanent change and instability, it is useful to review the disciplines of architecture and urban design and re-visit the basic questions (key problems of residential houses in the city; the design of new urban expansions; the possible spatial and functional relationships with existing patterns and density; new typologies, layouts and configurations; relations between public and private spaces in a dense environment). In the first workshop in 2011 we welcome papers that will contribute to a critical inventory, reviewing the discipline of architecture and the residential design in the urban context. This will show the problems and shifts we have to deal with." . . . . "Since 1970\u00B4s the process of urban growth has been as fast as never in the history.
