"The degradation processes taking place if fuel rod cladding material after exposure to the harsh nuclear reactor environment during normal service followed by a LOCA accident were studied. Cladding material ductility and ultimate strength decrease during Ar exposure (950\u00B0C) can be attributed to increasing amount of brittle \u03B1Zr[O] phase and increased amount of cleavage fracture of the base material (prior phase \u03B2). At the beginning of transformation, the necessary oxygen is supplied from the corrosion layer build during normal operation. Further exposure in argon results in different concentrations of H2 and O2 and thus different mechanical properties of the cladding material. The fractographic analysis explains the changes of mechanical properties and describes the degradation mechanisms taking place in the cladding material."@en . .
