"This functional sample represents the implementation of two-way (duplex) data communication interface, designed for stratospheric balloon experiments with a total transverse distances up to 100 km, line-of-sight. With its compact dimensions and the chosen UHF frequency band it is a mobile, hand-portable device integrated into the communication Yagi antenna. The device uses the unlicensed 868 MHz, with a radio-homologated for operation in Central Europe and the baud rate of 9600 bps, while the physical communication speed is 24 kbps. Highly directional Yagi antenna with a gain in the main forward lobe of 23 dB creates a sufficient radio link gain margin. The maximum transmit power reaches +27 dBm. Data transfer is secured by addressing the source and the target in a peer-to-peer communication channel prevents influencing other stations in the unlicensed band and at the same time ignores any unwanted radio traffic. Ground station interface can be connected to and powered from a laptop PC via USB. Flying radio station is implemented on the PC/104 PCB. The device has been successfully tested aboard balloon experiment up to an altitude of 33 km and with lateral distance of ~100 km."@en .
