Often it is not a significant percentage of additions; the trend is to shift from tenths and hundredths of a percent alloying elements to the thousandths of a percent to ppm. For example, rare earth metals (RE) in particular have found use in magnesium alloys, but also in aluminum alloys. Their great handicap, which often can not be balanced by their contribution to the increase of the mechanical and physical properties of the alloys, is their price and consequently lack of competitiveness of the castings. The question is whether it is possible to replace these elements and reduce the dependence on the almost exclusive producer - China.
