In the introduction particular types of coatings are described in detail with their respective coating technology. The characteristics of particular coatings are stated. Furthermore the present state and trends of developement of duplex coatings are introduced. Experimental part of thesis is divided into several parts. The first of them in detail describes principles and methods used for testing of duplex coatings and the testing conditions. As base material low-alloy construction steel 31CrMoV9 (CSN 15 330) was selected for its suitability for nitriding, for some tests also 34CrAlNi7 (CSN14 340) was used. Samples were nitrated and subsequently treated by PVD process. Different types of coatings (TiN, CrN, TiAlN and multilayer 3x(CrN-TiN)) with thicknesses 1 and 3\u00B5m were deposited. The properties of coatings were tested and various characteristics were measured, e.g. coating thickness (Calotest), resistance against adhesive wear (Scratch test) coating nanohardness, Young \u015B modulus, friction coefficient (Pin on Disc) and abrasion size (HEF). Further the EDX analysis and measurement of wear marks on profilometr Talysurf and laser confocal microscope LEXT were done. In detail the tribological behaviour of duplex coated friction couples under different conditions is described, e.g. temperature, different ways and weights of load. Experiments have shown that behaviour of duplex coated steels is influenced by many factors, e.g. type of coated material, type of coatings and its thickness, load weight or temperature. Positive influence of duplex treatment on service life was proved. In case of all coatings it comes to slow change of Young's modulus.
