"The control system, which controls the coal powder combustion in a coal-fired boiler, needs to deal with a dozen of problems. Beside the combustion stability supervision the system should minimize the heat losses, prevent combustion chamber and superheater slagging and should minimize the NOX emissions. However the control actions for solving the above mentioned problems may influence each other in a negative way, or alternatively they may be influenced by other control loops of the boiler, especially by the superheated steam pressure control loop. Another negative effect may be caused by randomly changing boundary conditions such as the coal quality, the mill function quality, the combustion air temperature variability, the combustion air channels geometry, or eventually the coal powder channels geometry, the air control damper operation, or the accuracy of measured parameters. A physical description of such a multi-parametrical system is presently a very complex problem. A new coal combustion control algorithm was designed, controlling actuators setting points and optimizing NOX and CO concentration in flue gases with the help of the innovatory black-box modeling technique. As a tool for boiler parameters visualization and action signals' setting a GUI application was developed in MATLAB. The communication between the testing application and the power plant OPC DA server was ensured by the MATLAB/OPC Toolbox. The new algorithm operation helped to decrease the mean NOX emission concentration between 20% and 33% with respect to the actual boiler load, while the mean CO emission concentrations did not increase over 250 mg/m3.
