"The work was focused to the investigation of both the mechanism and the kinetic of the saturation of multi-phase Cr-V tool steel with nitrogen, and to the assessment of how the different saturation level influences the mechanical properties of the material. As found out, the mechanism of the nitrogen saturation corresponds well to the iron - nitrogen equilibrium diagram, of course with respect to the high chromium content. The Cr - content of 7 % makes it possible to form the chromium nitrides during the nitriding. The surface hardness and the microhardness increase significantly as the temperature and/or dwell time of the nitriding increase. The hardness raise is between 200 and 400 Vickers -units.
