"Adiabatic demagnetization of a magnetic material involves its temperature drop, the magnetocaloric phenomenon (MCP). The process is used for cryogenic applications where the working substance is a paramagnetic salt showing the MCP in the milikelvin domain. As a rule the effect works only in a short temperature range. Its aplicability at higher, particularly the room temperatures, is difficult as the lattice thermal vibrations are relevant, and considerably decrease the cooling effect. Nevertheless, newly revealed materials, mostly based on gadolinium or other rare-earth elements, show a strong MCP in the temperature region of 230-330K. The cooling efect is realized by a rotating ring-shape wheel stuffed in by a Ga powder a part of its perimeter passing through a strong magnetic field. It seems to be a prospective ecological technique, moreover with low energy demands."@en .
