"Water causes problems in geotechnical structures in gaseous and solid state of matter. It is generally known that frost changes properties of soils. This alteration may subsequently cause landslides (which are often visible along the roads) or buildings damage, water supply failure etc. Miscellaneous soils have different sensitivity to freezing, they are so-called variously frost-resistant. What is actually freezing depth of soil, on what it depends and what can it? In our paper we will try to answer on these questions using our knowledge and experience. The first factor is the type of soil. Frost susceptible soils are not only fine-grained soils (clay and mud that absorb 20 to 40% of water in the normal consistency and freezing increases their volume by at least 9% of porosity), but also all the rocks that are exposure to water and significantly change its strength or lose character of solid rock. The weather conditions are the second factor of the freezing depth and they are described by frost index (empirical value of the sum of the min. air temperature during the winter period specified for each elevation), by the frost coefficient or by frost extent. The third factor is dependences on the temperature and time (experience shows that just three days of frost around -15 \u00B0 C can induce landslides). Description of the factors mentioned above (their determination and influence on soils and rocks) is supplement by a short case study of the landslide on the railway track."@en .
