"This article is focused on determine nano- and micro-structural and micro-mechanical parameters of timber, related to the different orientation of the fibers. It describes the capability to detect nano- and micro-structural and micro-mechanical parameters by using optical and electron microscopy, AFM and nanoindentation. These methods allow determining the material properties and defining individual phases. Based on that knowledge and knowing the structural parameters at the nano- and micro-level, it would be possible to design a micromechanical model, which could be used for optimization of the use of wood-based materials, such as glued laminated beams."@en .
