"Verification of the impact of temperature on the development of stress in the deposittunnel lining is one of the important tasks in the design of deep repository for spentfuel in sedimentary rocks. Container with spent fuel will produce heat for a long time period (about 50-100 years). The effect of thermal loading on the lining stability in the clay environment has been solved in the framework of the EU project - TIMODAZ (Thermal Impact on the Damaged Zone Around a Radioactive Waste Disposal in Clay Host Rocks). TIMODAZ was an international Research project, to which the Centre of Experimental Geotechnics, Faculty of Civil Engineering (CEG) was contributed. The project dealt especially with the influence of long-term thermal loading on the natural barrier formed by clay rocks (Boom Clay, Opalinus Clay, Argilitte-Oxfordian). An individual task was to research the stability of the tunnel lining under thermal loading. Research is being carried out by means of physical modelling. This paper describes the design of experiment, instrumentation, loading process, measured results, and conclusions. For modelling extremely unfavourable conditions in-situ physical model was built in hardrock environment and the space between the tunnel lining and the rock was filled with compacted concrete. The basic measured parameters were temperature and strain (calculated to stress). It was found out that the thermal loading caused considerable stress in tunnel lining, which could contribute to depletion of concrete strength.
