"The Centre of Experimental Geotechnics (Faculty of Civil Engineering, CTU in Prague) is in-volved in developing procedures and technologies for high-level radioactive (HLW) waste disposal. It is expected that bentonite will be used in large quantities as the sealing material for the Czech deep re-pository for HLW. It will be used in two principal locations: to backfill excavated areas of the deep re-pository and as a packing material surrounding the spent fuel waste packages. Sprayed bentonite tech-nology is one of the technologies being researched for both of these applications. This technology was originally considered principally with respect to the backfilling of the shafts and galleries excavated so as to allow access to the disposal wells containing the high-level radioactive waste. However, current research is also being aimed at the use of this technology to fill the space between the waste package and the wall of the disposal well which will place higher demands on the quality of the seal than previ-ously assumed (in particular in terms of sufficiently high density and homogeneity). This paper outlines the experience gained to date from the various stages of the research including the selection of a suita-ble spray material and the testing and modification of the equipment employed and presents the re-sults of the testing of a selection of sustainable materials."@en .
