"The habilitation thesis presents results of laboratory experimentation and in situ monitoring of HM in small urban streams, their sediments in particular. Six selected HM: Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb a Zn were assessed because of their regular occurrence in significant concentrations. In combination of laboratory and field research activities a methodology of treatment of sediment samples for HM analyses was created and tested. The final methodology includes rules and recommendations for sediment sampling, its treatment before HM analysis and HM analyses. HM distribution and remobilization between the sediment and the liquid phase of different characteristics were tested under laboratory conditions. Some of findings are: binding strength in sediments varies for different metals and HM availability from sediments of flowing waters differs from slack waters ones. HM remobilization from sediment to liquid phase occurs mainly in first 10 to 20 minutes. Cd is remobilized the most significantly; Cr and Ni usually bind in sediment the most firmly. For releasing of HM into liquid phase, complexing compounds play an important role. Binding speed of HM from liquid phase to the sediment depends, besides sediment quality, also on its amount in a stream. The created methodology and results of laboratory experiments were applied in several studies conducted in real conditions of small urban streams in Prague area. Binding behaviour of HM in the sediment of a sewer system as well as small urban streams was observed, acute events in a small urban stream were monitored and HM risk and potential biological availability in several small streams monitored for a long time was assessed. It was observed that Cu, Zn and Pb are the most problematic HM in studied streams and the bioavailability of HM from sediments impacted by different impacts (combined sewer overflows, stormwater drains or waste water treatment plants) is different."@en . .
