"The paper represents an introduction to study of the issues and constitutes a part of a comprehensive research on the set of engravings which, besides the historical perspective, brings a geodetic-cartographic view of these works. It devotes minutely to the fields that could be processed using methods of digital cartography and GIS. These include e.g. tracking of identical points between the engravings and the then or contemporary map sources, the evaluation of scale number or numbers, modelling the depicted situation over a digital terrain model and the resulting visualization of visibility options from particular elevated locations in the vicinity of the displayed area. Within the research the engravings are put into context of possibilities of the then cartographic production. Although in most cases the procedure or techniques of genesis of the engravings or other technical details are not known, it is possible using mentioned methods to reconstruct some of the facts recorded in the engravings, to get additional information and convert the more than three and a half centuries old paintings from the plain 'drawing' into the 'map work'."@en . . . . .
