The aim of this study is to determine LAI values in a mountain catchment through the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) analyzed by remote sensing methods. The NDVI values were estimated by processing the LANDSAT imagery in the region of the Jizera Mountains. In 1987-2010, the acid atmospheric deposition, dieback of spruce plantations, extended clear-cut, and reforestation practices, caused there dramatic changes in the vegetation cover. Statistically significant relation between LAI and NDVI was found, and, thus, the LANDSAT imagery seems to be an effective tool to estimate LAI values reflecting changes in the vegetation complex."@en . .
